It's getting closer. I'm back in Minnesota to see my parents for a bit before being gone for two years. Although, it turns out I'm only in Minnesota for about half the time and I'm traveling to see friends, family, and have some fun.
In order to go to Mauritania with the Peace Corps I have to get a new passport. It's called a no-fee passport. My understanding is that I need this passport because I am essentially a government employee working in Mauritania for two years, although the Peace Corps is a volunteer organization. Any of my vacation traveling while I'm there is done on my own personal passport. I also have to obtain a visa to go to Mauritania. As is stands, while obtaining the new passport and visa, I have sent in six ID photos. When I arrive in Mauritania I am supposed to bring 12-15 photos, eight of which I surrender when I land. That's lots of pictures.
During my two years in Mauritania I am planning on visiting several other African nations: South Africa, Morocco, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, and Egypt. I am visiting friends in South Africa, hopefully climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, seeing the pyramids and the Library of Alexandria in Egypt, and exploring the nations around Mauritania through Morocco, Mali, and Senegal. Since I hope to visit these places I need to get more visas. South Africa doesn't require a visa, nor does Morocco or Senegal. I can get the one for Egypt when I land there. However, Mali and Tanzania require visas to be obtained before travel. I think all this will provide for some interesting experiences while I'm there, in obtaining the visas and visiting the countries.
It's all becoming more real as I learn more about Mauritania and hand in more of my paperwork.
